How to Remove Speckles and Dust in Scanned Images using Photoshop

Here's a quick tip I discovered today while cleaning up a lot of scanned images. It's a 30 second video tutorial on how to find dirt, dust and scratches that's hard to find when you're trying to remove the background.

  • Easier: just use the default red stroke. Less setup, and it's more defined.

  • When the background has been removed I press "load selection" in PS to see the "dirt"

  • Yeah, using stroke works just as well.

    "Load Selection" will only let you see the dust particles that have more than 50% opacity, otherwise you won't see the "marching ants" around them. The beauty of using a Layer Style such as "Outer Glow" with a big spread, or "Stroke" is that even the tiniest speck becomes very visible.
